Charlestown 18th Century Harbour and shipwreck museum is a superb day out for children and adults alike. I was lucky enough to get booked to face paint for their first ever Classic Sail Festival being held in the wonderfully untouched Charlestown Georgian Harbour, Cornwall. In fact the same harbour where a lot of Poldark is filmed. I set up Saturday morning in the public harbour area just outside the Pier House Hotel and had the most amazing view even with the grey start to the day. The Classic Sail Ships where berthed on the inner harbour with their flags flying in the wind creating the perfect setting for me to imagine the place buzzing with tall ships and fishermen going about their business in far gone times. As the day progressed way past the yard arm the weather got brighter delivering a beautiful afternoon. The tide ebbed with the sunshine glistening on the horizon behind the Poldark cider, whiskey and gin gazebo and The Rum Sailor. It wasn't long after the sun came out that the people arrived turning the peaceful harbour into a hive of fun and activity. I ended up doing a full days work busy with not just face painting but also glitter tattoos. Plus the removable hair braids were a huge hit with the young girls because they could take them in and out with the school term about to start. This kept them and the parents happy win, win! I was pitched next to local author Jani Tully Chaplin. A lovely lady who not only writes superb children's books series, The Manor House Stories, but also illustraits her own book. Fabulous!
Sunday was bright sunshine all day. However, when a cloud got in the suns way you could feel autumn poking her head around the corner with the cool sharpness in the breeze. There were less kids on the Sunday. I put this down to it being the very last day of the summer holidays with some going back to school on Monday. The harbour itself was still busy with locals and tourists. Charlestown is definitely a place I would recommend going to visit. Make sure you visit the Shipwreck museum. It's also a superb place to take your Kayak or scuba gear! If you're lucky you might even meet a pirate or two. Just make sure you dont be nicking their rum or treasure chest or you may find yerself walking the plank!
